BUSHBANDIT® / STRUIKROVER®

The Bushbandit / Struikrover® is a research instrument developed by Matthijs Smaal. It is a specially designed tube with which all martens and other predators (e.g. fox, raccoon, raccoon dog) found in Western-Europe can be photographed or filmed with a camera trap. This is described in Smaal & Van Manen, 2022. In addition, the Bushbandit / Struikrover® appears to be the most effective for identifying the water shrew (Verhees et al, 2023). But songbirds are also easy to capture on camera. The Bushbandti / Struikrover® is a further optimization of previously devised research instruments and meets the following 6 requirements:

  • Suitable for inventorying all mustelids
  • Easy to transport and quick to install
  • Easy to use and without any specific knowledge
  • Cheap lure that maximizes detection chances
  • Sturdy, robust and virtually indestructible
  • Can be placed virtually invisibly in the field

The Bushbandit / Struikrover® is available at Cameraval.eu in 3 versions:

  • Complete = Completely assembled (so ready-made and including camera trap)
  • Customized construction kit (you build in all the parts and your own camera yourself)
  • Customized Built-in kit (your camera will be built in by us after you send it)

Here you will find an article about the effectiveness of the Bushbandit / Struikrover® to investigate the day/night rhythm of the red vole in the field: Van Manen W. & M. Smaal, 2021. Circadian and ultradian rhythms in free living bank voles (Myodes glareolus). Lutra 64(2):73-80.
